    It is recommended that participants have at least a Bachelor of Enginering degree and have a basic understanding of protection.

Major power failures can have a serious impact on the economy and on critical infrastructure functions. For individual businesses and consumers, the impact is on a smaller scale but by no means less serious. Successfully protecting power systems and related high-voltage equipment against major power failures depends on identifying the most effective protection and control technology for T&D assets. It also requires the most appropriate substation implementation or upgrade solution. With the advances in protection and communication technology in recent decades, the increase of renewable generation and its impact on the utility infrastructure, such identification and implementation activities are extremely challenging.

For whom?
These courses are designed for technical professionals working in transmission or distribution network operator companies, consultancy organisations, in large industries or governmental organisations involved in design, engineering, commissioning or maintenance of protection systems. It is recommended that participants have at least a Bachelor of Engineering degree.

Course outline
In a series of three courses, the fundamentals of power system protection are presented: 

  • Introduction to power system protection (2-days)
  • Overcurrent & earth fault protection (2-days)
  • Differential and impedance protection (3-days)
The first two-day session lays the basis for the remaining sessions and is also an introduction to protection technology for engineers new to the subject. Basic concepts are explained including fault current calculations. The second three-day session is entirely dedicated to overcurrent and earth fault protection. The third three-day session deals with differential and impedance protection.

A very “hands-on” approach is applied whereby the concepts are taught, and then the understanding is strengthened by real world examples. Interaction is encouraged between attendees and the presenters, to underpin the learning objectives.

Result/Learning objectives
An understanding of the fundamental principles of power system protection remains essential for many practicing engineers. Through a broad introduction, and more detailed sessions, attendees will:
  • Develop an understanding of the most common types of protection
  • Learn how to apply the theory to a range of practical examples
  • Comprehend the jargon when specifying protection and control equipment
  • Understand how to determine relay settings, and/or evaluate systems designed by others
